What is National Service Scheme?

National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary student centered programme implemented in the realm of higher education since the last four decades. It aims at developing the individual's character, outlook, and behaviour, and creating an effective citizen out of the volunteer. The tool it has adopted for such change in an individual is 'service to the community'.

Most often, people misunderstand the above mentioned objective of NSS. They think that NSS volunteers are meant only for doing social work. They do not realise that the activities of NSS are meant for education and self development of the volunteer, not for development of the society!

The principal beneficiary is the student, and what ever the community gains is a by-product of the educational experience the student gains from participating in the activity.

The present day educational system is highly professionalised. It aids in changing the knowledge condition of the student, but does very little to change the student's attitude condition. It is this gap that NSS in higher secondary schools and colleges aims to bridge.
